The Qualities of the Element of Air are in Vata Dosha, Air is Movement, Changeable, Still or Dynamic.

A Brief Encounter with the Element of Air

Air permeates our whole body and all the life we encounter on this planet. It wasn’t until plants could photosynthesise carbon dioxide and create oxygen that the earth’s atmosphere could sustain life. Until then the earth’s atmosphere was poisonous, full of carbon dioxide. Plant life converted this gas into the oxygen essential to life as we know it. David Suzuki tells us of interesting calculations that have been made on the elements of the atmosphere we breathe. When we inhale we take in argon atoms that remain unprocessed until we breathe them out again.

Since argon is an inert substance it doesn’t react with anything. With one exhalation we release billions of argon atoms. These atoms go out into the space we are in and mingle with other exhalations. We can be in a room full of people all sharing the same atmosphere, exchanging the same argon particles. These particles go out into the wider environment. It ultimately recycles around the world. At some point in the We can be in a room full of people all sharing the same atmosphere, exchanging the same argon particles. These particles go out into the wider environment. It ultimately recycles around the world. At some point in the future, we will breathe some of these same atoms again. The very same atoms have been circulating around the world since the dinosaurs existed, since Emperors rules and Buddha, Jesus Christ and Mohamed lived. Every breath we take will suffuse with every life form into infinity.  The very same atoms have been circulating around the world since the dinosaurs existed, since Emperors rules and Buddha, Jesus Christ and Mohamed lived. In fact, we are all connected and the elements of Vata enable this to exist in our world today.

Air moves

It has shifting qualities like the wind, and it can be both strong and weak in its force and effect, from tornado strength to a gentle breeze. Air generates movement in the physical world, causing trees to sway and waves to form, sometimes to terrifying size. Air movement creates roughness and dryness; it shifts grains,  Air movement creates roughness and dryness; it shifts grains, particles, and water, eroding surfaces. Air movements carry clouds, shift gasses, micro-organisms, and germs.

Air has the quality of lightness. Air is life:  it is everywhere, in every space. It creates movement through the body and is connected to our sense of touch and of kinetic energy. Air is linked to ether / space which provides the channels through which air moves. Air has the quality of lightness. Air is life:  it is everywhere, in every space. To explore more about the balance of the elements in our universe David Suzuki's book is worth reading, it's not specific to Ayurveda but has some wonderful examples of how our world works.
